WASHINGTON, Dec 21 (KUNA) -- US President Donald Trump signed into law late Sunday a bill extending government funding for one day averting a shutdown at midnight as Congress reached earlier a deal on a USD 900 billion coronavirus relief package.
The White House said in a statement that Trump signed into law the "Extension of Continuing Appropriations Act, 2021," which provides fiscal year (FY) 2021 appropriations to Federal agencies through Monday, December 21, 2020, for continuing projects and activities of the Federal Government.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced Sunday evening from the Senate floor "we can finally report what our nation has needed to hear for a very long time, more help is on the way.
"Moments ago, in consultation with our committees, the four leaders of the Senate and the House finalized an agreement. It will be another major rescue package for the American people," he added.
In a joint statement, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer affirmed "we have reached agreement with Republicans and the White House on an emergency coronavirus relief and omnibus package that delivers urgently needed funds to save the lives and livelihoods of the American people as the virus accelerates."
The House and Senate are expected to vote on the package on Monday.
For his part, President-elect Joe Biden said in a statement "I applaud the bipartisan Congressional economic relief package that will deliver critical resources to fight COVID-19, including funding for vaccine distribution, and much needed temporary relief for workers, families, and small businesses.
"My message to everyone out there struggling right now, help is on the way," he added. (end)
