KUWAIT, Dec 10 (KUNA) -- The United Nations in Kuwait and the Kuwait Foreign Ministry's National Human Rights Diwan stressed the importance of placing human rights as one of the first priorities while recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic.
This came in a joint press release Thursday by the UN and Diwan on the occasion of the Human Rights Day, under the theme "Recover Better - Stand Up for Human Rights".
Both sides pointed out that COVID-19 has been fueled by deepening poverty, rising inequalities, structural and entrenched discrimination and other gaps in human rights protection.
They also noted that the Human Rights Day is an opportunity to reaffirm the importance of human rights in re-building the world, calling for global solidarity as well as interconnectedness and shared humanity.
Furthermore, the statement affirmed that human rights are at the heart of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), describing it as the main driving force behind the SDGs advancement.
The statement shed light on the pioneering role of Kuwait as the International Humanitarian Center in preserving the human rights, noting that Kuwait is a state party to seven international human rights treaties.
Kuwait has exerted great effort to enhance its human rights record and accept several recommendations of the Universal Periodic Review of the Human Rights Council, said the Representative of the UN Secretary General and Resident Coordinator to Kuwait Dr. Tareq Al-Sheikh.
For his part, Chairman of the National Diwan for Human Rights, Ambassador Jassim Al-Mubaraki stated that the Diwan looks forward to more achievements and partnerships with regional and international institutions related to human rights to raise the society's awareness of the culture of human rights, to promote and protect it.
