Kuwait, UN hail volunteer efforts in post-pandemic world

KUWAIT, Dec 4 (KUNA) -- Kuwait and the UN have praised volunteers around the world as unsung heroes in the face of the coronavirus pandemic, which has shown the altruistic virtue to be largely synonymous with development and prosperity.
The pandemic has shone light on Kuwaitآ’s "vibrant culture" of volunteerism, where countless youngsters joined local coronavirus relief efforts of their own volition, said a statement issued jointly by Kuwaitآ’s youth affairs ministry and the UN Resident Coordinatorآ’s office.
A day before the UN observes its designated day for the noble cause, the "solidarity" exhibited by millions of volunteers all over the world as they sought to tame a raging pandemic was nothing short of admirable, said Dr. Tarek El-Sheikh, the UNآ’s Kuwait-based Resident Coordinator.
Heaping praise on volunteer efforts in equal measure, UNICEFآ’s Area Representative for the Gulf region Eltayeb Adam highlighted volunteersآ’ determination to "save lives" amid the pandemic, in addition to protecting those "most vulnerable" to the outbreak.
The virtue has risen to prominence in Kuwait lately, said Public Authority for Youth chief Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi, adding the government has always firmly backed such gracious endeavors that prove beneficial for all involved.
Such efforts have been placed firmly in the limelight this year in light of the pandemic, added the official, who revealed that the youth body is currently putting the "finishing touches" to a plan aiming to ratchet up volunteer work in Kuwait. (end) ak.nam
