Japan: 3,002 new virus cases, total at 141,928

TOKYO, Nov 27 (KUNA) -- Japan recorded 3,002 new cases of the coronavirus over the last 24 hours as of 4 p.m. (07:00 GMT) on Friday, raising the nation's total number to 141,928, the health ministry and local authorities said.
The country's cumulative death toll rose by 33 to 2,077. Tokyo added 570 new infections, marking its highest daily tally, which brought the total cases in the Japanese capital to 39,649.
In addition, the northernmost main island of Hokkaido reported 252 new infections and Aichi Prefecture in central Japan had 234 cases.
In response to a recent surge in the number of new infections, the Tokyo metropolitan government last week raised the coronavirus alert by one notch to the highest level of the four-tier system, which means the infections appear to be spreading.
It plans to request restaurants serving alcohol to close at 10:00 p.m. for 20 days starting Saturday. The tallies exclude those who were linked to the virus-hit Diamond Princess cruise ship in February. (end) mk.rk
