TOKYO, Nov 26 (KUNA) -- Japan reported 2,223 new cases of the coronavirus over the last 24 hours as of 4:00 p.m. (0700 GMT) on Thursday, raising the nation's total number to 138,926, the health ministry and local authorities said.
The country's cumulative death toll rose by 23 to 2,044. Tokyo added 481 new infections, topping 400 for the second straight day, which brought the total cases in the Japanese capital to 39,079.
In response to a recent surge in the number of new infections, the Tokyo metropolitan government said Wednesday it will request restaurants serving alcohol to close at 10:00 p.m. for 20 days starting Saturday.
The tallies exclude those who were linked to the virus-hit Diamond Princess cruise ship in February. (end)
