Spain’s Catalonia closes borders for 15 days to face coronavirus

MADRID, Oct 29 (KUNA) -- Spainآ’s Catalonia on Thursday declared a 15-day ban on entering and exiting its territory so as to control the spread of the virus.
Catalonia vice president Pere Aragones said in a news conference that banning movement between the various towns in the province will also take place at weekends during the next 15 days.
This comes as part of strict measures taken in Spain that include the suspension of sports and cultural activities, and the closure of cafأ© shops and restaurants at weekends from Friday evenings until Monday mornings during the declared period, he added.
Coinciding with this move, most of the Spanish provinces announced the closure of their borders until November 9, the decisions affect 70 percent of Spanish people.
Meanwhile, Madrid announced its determination to close its borders for some specific days on November 2 and 9, although the Spanish government warned the government in Madrid that this violates the emergency articles stipulating for a nine-day closure.
Coronavirus cases rose to 301,493 in Madrid, 217,205 in Catalonia and 119,701 in Andalusia, according to the Spanish Ministry of Healthآ’s statistics on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, the Spanish parliament approved the extension of the state of emergency for six months that ends on May 9 in a bid to control the virus which has caused the infection of 1,136,503 people since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. (end) hnd.hm
