Belgian capital announces tight measures to curb COVID-19 spread

BRUSSELS, Oct 24 (KUNA) -- The Brussels regional government Saturday announced a number of tight measures to stop the rise of Covid-19 cases in the Belgian capital.
The minister-president of the Brussels regional government Rudi Vervoort announced in a press conference that the obligation to wear a mask at all times and all over the region is restored. A curfew will be imposed in Brussels from 10:00PM - 6:00 AM.
Teleworking is to be made obligatory , and all cultural venues are to close, including museums, galleries, theatres and cinemas.
All sporting facilities are to close, including gyms, tennis courts and swimming pools.
All shops must close no later than 20.00, except takeaway restaurants, which may stay open until 22.00 "These measures are in the interest of our citizens. It will be difficult, but if we donآ’t make a start now we will never succeed," Vervoort said. The new measures will in force from Monday 26 October until 19 November.
These measures are in addition to the measures brought in by the Federal Government of Belgium on Friday.
Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo yesterday announced stricter measures for sports, for culture, youth movements, amusement parks and higher education all over Belgium.
Total infections of coronavirus cases in Belgium Saturday increased to 287,700 with 17,568 new infections reported by Belgian health authorities.
70 more deaths from COVID-19 were reported in the last 24 hours raising the total death toll to 10,658. (end) nk
