Trump to Congress: keen to lift Sudan off terror sponsor list

WASHINGTON, Oct 23 (KUNA) -- US President Donald Trump has informed Congress of his intent to formally take Sudan off its State Sponsor of Terrorism list.
"This follows on Sudan's recent agreement to resolve certain claims of United States victims of terror and their families," read a statement by the White House.
"Yesterday, in fulfillment of that agreement, the transitional government of Sudan transferred USD 335 million into an escrow account for these victims and their families," added the statement.
Washington described the move as a "momentous step forward" and a "pivotal turning point" in its bilateral relations with Khartoum, ahead of a "new future of collaboration and support" between both.
"We commend the transitional government of Sudan for its work to chart a new course and stand ready to support the people of Sudan as they work to build a better future for themselves and future generations," it added. (end) rsr.sd
