UN: warring factions in Libya reach early agreement

GENEVA, Oct 21 (KUNA) -- Warring factions in Libya had reached a preliminary deal on issues of great importance, which will have a positive impact on the Libyan people, the deputy head of UN Support Mission in Libya for political affairs Stephanie Williams said Wednesday.
This announcement came in a visual press conference after the meeting between rival Libyan factions slated on October 19 and 24 in Geneva, Switzerland. The meeting is also known as the 5+5 Joint Military Commission (JMC).
"I am pleased to report that the two sides have reached agreement on several important issues which directly impact the lives and welfare of the Libyan people," said Williams, a US diplomat.
"I urge the two parties negotiating here in Geneva to solve all outstanding issues and forge a lasting cease fire agreement," she added.
The tentative agreement allows the opening of roads linking areas and cities in Libya as well as air transportation, she noted.
Both sides also agreed on ending propaganda and escalating language that might lead to tension in Libya, vowing to direct efforts towards supporting efforts for military de-escalation.
In regards to the resumption of oil production, the two sides were in favor of restructuring protection of sites in the country to ensure the flow and increase of production.
The Geneva talks coincided with preparations for the virtual Libya political gathering on October 26, which will precede direct talks between Libyan parties in Tunisia on November 9. (end) ta.gta
