UAE wins two-year membership in UN nuclear watchdog board

VIENNA, Sept 24 (KUNA) -- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been elected to serve on the International Atomic Energy Agencyآ’s (IAEA) 35-nation Board of Governors for the next two years.
Amid an election process during an annual meeting of the IAEAآ’s general conference on Thursday, 89 votes out of a total of 116 came in favor of UAE membership, while 25 members abstained, according to election results.
Having previously served two previous stints in the UN nuclear watchdogآ’s board, this is the third time Abu Dhabi has won membership in the IAEAآ’s Board of Governors.
The UAE now joins Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Morocco as the five Arab countries currently serving on the board, which is mainly responsible for drawing up most of the UN nuclear watchdogآ’s policy. (end) amg.nam
