US House of Representatives passes spending bill to avoid govt. shutdown

WASHINGTON, Sept 23 (KUNA) -- US House of Representatives passed Tuesday evening a bill to avert a government shutdown before the end of the month.
The legalisation, which passed with a 359-57 bipartisan vote, would keep the government running through December 11.
The legislation is expected to head to Senate this week for a vote before sending it to President Donald Trump for signing.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement that an agreement has been reached with Republicans on the Continuing Resolution (CR) "to add nearly USD eight billion in desperately needed nutrition assistance for hungry schoolchildren and families." For his part, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer tweeted "Iآ’m pleased the House passed a CR tonight to fund the government through 12/11.
"It prevents a costly government shutdown and funds nutrition assistance programs to help struggling families," he added.
He urged the Senate to pass this bill and send it to the President swiftly. (end) si.bs
