Jordan closing border with Syria after local COVID-19 infections spike

AMMAN, Aug 12 (KUNA) -- Jordan announced Wednesday the closure of its land borders with Syria for a week, coinciding with the increase in local infections with COVID-19 the majority of which are coming across the border.
This was brought up in a statement by Prime Minister Dr. Omar Razzaz who chaired a meeting at the Ministry of Interior to discuss the implications of the health and epidemiological conditions on the border centers.
The statement quoted Razzaz as saying that the increasing number of local cases infected with COVID-19 rose to 25 local cases within two days, most of them from the Jaber border crossing with Syria.
He explained that the matter constitutes a source of concern that requires immediate measures to be taken to prevent the spread of infections.
For his part, Health Minister Saad Jaber was quoted as saying that the recently recorded local infection rate requires tightening procedures that ensure compliance with public health and safety requirements. (end) mjb.lr
