Turkish seismic vessel starts research in E. Mediterranean

ISTANBUL, Aug 12 (KUNA) -- Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Donmez announced the start of the Oruc Reis Turkish vessel of two-dimensional seismic survey work in the eastern Mediterranean.
Oruc Reis takes x-rays of seas, until August 23, seismic cable landed in the Mediterranean for two-dimensional seismic research, Donmaz said in a tweet on his Twitter account Wednesday.
On Monday, the Turkish ship sailed from the southern state of Antalya to off the island of Cyprus, to resume exploration activities, accompanied by the Ataman as well as the Genghis Khan ships.
The ship can perform three-dimensional seismic operations up to 8,000 meters deep and two-dimensional seismic operations up to 15,000 meters deep.
The ship contains a remotely operated submersible vehicle that has seabed mapping, measurement and sampling systems.
Oruc Reis also contains geological and oceanographic laboratories and equipment that can take basic samples from the sea floor.
The ship has a crew of 55, including 24 sailors and 31 administrators and researchers.
Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar confirmed that his country would take all necessary measures to protect its rights and interests in the eastern Mediterranean.
Turkey announced exploration activities in an area between Cyprus and Greece.
While Turkey rejected Greeceآ’s objections to its exploration operations in a disputed area in the eastern Mediterranean, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced earlier that his country would resume hydrocarbon exploration operations in a disputed area in the eastern Mediterranean.
