Japan reports 1,308 new virus cases, total at 49,381

TOKYO, Aug 10 (KUNA) -- Japan reported 1,308 new cases of the coronavirus over the last 24 hours as of 4:00 p.m. (0700 GMT) on Monday, bringing the nation's total number to 49,381, the health ministry and local authorities said.
The country's death toll rose by five to 1,048. Tokyo confirmed 197 new cases, staying below 200 for the first time since July 27, which brought the cumulative cases in the Japanese capital to 16,064.
The tallies exclude those who were linked to the virus-hit Diamond Princess cruise ship in February.
Since the government fully lifted a nationwide state of emergency late May, the number of daily new cases across the country has been on an upward trend.
Despite recent resurgence of new COVID-19 cases, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe reiterated on Sunday that the government has no immediate plan to reinstate the state of emergency, saying not many patients have been hospitalized.
But Abe urged the public again to take anti-infection measures during the holidays this week. (end) mk.bs
