Int'l conf. on Lebanon pledges aid up to USD 297.9 mln

PARIS, Aug 9 (KUNA) -- The participants in the international conference backing Lebanon pledged on Sunday to offer urgent aid to country worth USD 297.9 million to help the victims of the explosion that hit recently Beirut port.
The countries participated in the videoconference stressed the need of the direct delivery of aid to the population transparently.
Meanwhile, His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah presided over the Kuwaiti delegation to the videoconference.
At the end of the videoconference, representatives of about 30 countries, including US President Donald Trump and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, stressed in a statement the necessity of coordinating aid under the UN patronage.
They said that the aid should be delivered directly and transparently to the Lebanese.
They also agreed on mobilizing key resources during the coming days and weeks, stressing their readiness to back Lebanon's financial and economic crisis.
At the beginning of the conference, Macron called for rapid and effective movement to support Lebanon after the explosion that rocked Beirut port. (end) mjz.hm
