Gulf bloc presses for extension on Iran arms embargo

RIYADH, Aug 9 (KUNA) -- An international arms embargo on Iran should remain in place beyond its October expiry, Gulf states told the UN Security Council on Sunday, ahead of a UN vote next week on whether or not to extend the measure.
"It is inappropriate to lift restrictions on the supply of weapons from and to Iran until Iran gives up its destabilizing activities in the region and stops supplying terrorist and sectarian organizations with weapons," GCC chief Dr. Nayef Al-Hajraf wrote in a letter to the UN Security Council (UNSC).
Iranآ’s persistent interference in the affairs of regional countries necessitates an extension to the arms embargo, which is set to end on October 18 under the Islamic Republicآ’s 2015 nuclear accord with world powers, he added, saying it would help ensure the regionآ’s security and stability.
