Japan reports 1,309 new virus cases, total at 43,686

TOKYO, Aug 6 (KUNA) -- Japan reported 1,309 new cases of the coronavirus over the last 24 hours as of 04:00 p.m. (0700 GMT) on Thursday, bringing the nation's total number to 43,686, the health ministry and local authorities said.
The country's death toll rose by three to 1,029. Among the country's 47 prefectures, Tokyo has the largest number of confirmed infections at 360, which brought its cumulative cases to 14,645.
The tallies exclude those who were linked to the virus-hit Diamond Princess cruise ship in February.
Since the government fully lifted a nationwide state of emergency late May, the number of daily new cases across the country has been on an upward trend.
Despite recent resurgence of new COVID-19 cases, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Thursday that the government has no immediate plan to reinstate the state of emergency, saying the number of serious cases is few. But Abe urged the public to take anti-infection measures during the holidays next week. (end) mk.gta
