Thousands displaced amid fierce California wildfire

WASHINGTON, Aug 3 (KUNA) -- A wind-driven wildfire in the US state of California has forced thousands out of their homes and spread to over 20,516 acres of land, the fire department said on Monday.
The blaze, christened, "Apple fire", by local firefighters, first erupted on Friday in the community of Cherry Valley, some 75 miles east of the city of Los Angeles, forcing 7,800 people to evacuate, according to the fire department.
The fire is mainly concentrated in a forested hillside, hindering access for fire service vehicles, it added. (end) rsr.nam
