Trump authorizes sanctions on China over Hong Kong

KUWAIT, July 15 (KUNA) -- US President Donald Trump announced Tuesday he signed a legislation and an Executive Order (EO) "to hold China accountable for its oppressive actions against the people of Hong Kong." "The Hong Kong Autonomy Act which I signed this afternoon, passed unanimously through Congress," Trump said in a press conference at the White House.
He affirmed that "this law gives my administration powerful new tools to hold responsible the individuals in the entities involved in extinguishing Hong Kong's freedom." He added that the Executive order he signed ends "US preferential treatment for Hong Kong." "Hong Kong will now be treated the same as mainland China, no special privileges, no special economic treatment, and no export of sensitive technologies," he noted.
For its part, the White House, announcing the Bill in a press release, noted that the Hong Kong Autonomy Act "authorizes and impose sanctions on foreign persons, entities, and financial institutions that contribute to China's actions to remove autonomy from Hong Kong." (end) si.ibi
