EU urges Armenia, Azerbaijan to stop fighting

BRUSSELS, July 13 (KUNA) -- The European Union Monday urged Armenia and Azerbaijan to stop the armed confrontation, refrain from action and rhetoric that provoke tension, and undertake immediate measures to prevent further escalation.
This was expressed in a statement by EU lead spokesperson on foreign affairs and security policy, Peter Stano, after both Armenia and Azerbaijan reported a serious incident at their bilateral border, involving the use of heavy weapons on Sunday and Monday which led to loss of lives.
The EU called on both sides to strictly respect the ceasefire, devote energy and resources to fighting the coronavirus pandemic, re-engage in negotiations under the auspices of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and prepare their populations for peace. (end) nk.mt
