UNSC members approve resolution to provide aid to people NW Syria

KUWAIT, July 12 (KUNA) -- UN Security Council adopted a resolution to deliver, for one year, humanitarian aid and life-saving materials to people in northwestern Syrian through Bab Al-Hawa crossing from the side of Turkey.
UNSC members approved, late Saturday, resolution 2533 after failing, for four times, to extend resolution 2504 which granted mandate for humanitarian organizations to provide aid to people in northwestern Syria via Bab Al-Hawa and Al-Salam crossings.
The last amended resolution was tabled by Russia on Friday but only received four votes and was opposed by seven members, while four abstained.
Russia submitted a draft yesterday to deliver aid through Bab Al-Hawa crossing, which is closer to Idleb, for 12 months.
Belgium and Germany co-submitted a draft resolution on Thursday, calling for delivery of aid through Bab Al-Hawa and Al-Salam crossings, but was opposed by Russia and China.
UN Humanitarian Office (OCHA) said humanitarian operations conducted by UN agencies and its partners were serving 2.8 million people in northwestern Syria.
Up to 1,759 trucks loaded with life-saving materials entered Syria last month to assist more than six million children, women and men. (end) asf.bs
