Japan reports 280 new virus cases, total at 21,408

TOKYO, July 11 (KUNA) -- The number of Japan's new coronavirus infections rose by 280 to 21,408 over the last 24 hours on Saturday, the health ministry and local authorities said.
The country's death toll remained flat at 982. Tokyo confirmed 206 new infections, topping exceeded 200 for the third consecutive day, which brought the total cases in the Japanese capital to 7,721.
The Tokyo metropolitan government said many of the cases are related to nightlife spots and reflect the results of intensive testing on employees at nighttime establishments.
Despite recent surge of new COVID-19 cases in Tokyo, Japan on Friday eased restrictions on holding events nationwide as planned.
The government raised the maximum number of attendees at major events, such as sporting matches and music concerts, from 1,000 to 5,000.
For indoor events, the limit is 5,000 people or 50 percent capacity, whichever is lower.
The tallies exclude those who were linked to the virus-hit Diamond Princess cruise ship in February. (end) mk.sd
