Irish finance minister to head Euro group

BRUSSELS, July 9 (KUNA) -- The Eurogroup Thursday elected Paschal Donohoe, Minister for Finance of Ireland, as the new President of the Eurogroup in a secret ballot.
Donohoe will take office as of July 13 and will serve a two-and-a-half year term, succeeding Mario Centeno of Portugal, said an EU statement following a video conference of Eurogoup finance ministers this evening.
The first Eurogroup meeting under Donohoe's presidency is currently planned for September 11. Donohoe was appointed Minister for Finance of Ireland in June 2017.
There were two other candidates for the post; Luxembourg's Pierre Gramegna and Spain's Nadia Calvino.
The 19-member Eurogroup is an informal body where ministers of euro area member states discuss matters of common concern in relation to sharing the euro as the single currency. (end) nk.hb
