US reports staggering 60,021 COVID-19 cases, Brazil at alarming 45,305

KUWAIT, July 8 (KUNA) -- The US recorded the highest number of new coronavirus cases in a single day as over 60,000 cases were rerouted in the past 24 hours, whereas Brazil recorded over 45,000 new cases.
According to Johns Hopkins University, the US recorded 60,021 new coronavirus cases and 1,195 deaths in past 24 hours as the total cases in the nation reached 2,996,098 and 131,480 deaths.
This comes as at least 24 US states have paused or rolled back reopening plans with a surge in coronavirus cases in at least 31 states.
Georgia has become the ninth state in the US with over 100,000 coronavirus cases.
Meanwhile, Brazil recorded 45,305 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, according to Brazil's health ministry, as the country now has 1,668,589 coronavirus cases.
The country also recorded 1,254 coronavirus deaths bringing Brazil's death toll to 66,741.
The US and Brazil rank first and second globally in the number of coronavirus cases and deaths. (end) si.gta
