US begins formal withdrawal from WHO

WASHINGTON, July 7 (KUNA) -- US Administration, on Tuesday, has notified the UN that it is formally withdrawing from the World Health Organization (WHO).
The Washington Post quoted a senior US official as saying that the notice of withdrawal was delivered to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
According to the newspaper, the US must provide a written notice a year before departure and pay its debts to the organization, according to the provisions of a resolution passed by Congress in 1948.
Last May, Trump threatened to permanently halt US funding to WHO and reconsider the country's membership in the UN body if it does not "commit to major substantive improvements" within the next 30 days.
Last April, Trump announced that his country would stop funding the organization because of what he described then as "severe mismanagement and coverage of a virus spread". (end) rsr.aa
