Africa coronavirus infections top 48,000 -- disease center

RABAT, July 5 (KUNA) -- The novel coronavirus has infected up to 448,512 people in Africa, while 10,903 others have succumbed to the highly contagious illness, said a disease control office studying the spread of the virus in the massive continent.
There have been 116,195 recoveries from the coronavirus reported thus far in the continent, Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a statement.
It pinpointed South Africa as the epicenter of the disease in the region, with 177,124 coronavirus cases in that country alone, followed by Egypt and Nigeria with 72,711 and 27,564 infections, respectively.
Egypt holds the lionآ’s share of coronavirus fatalities in Africa, with 3,201 deaths reported, followed by South Africa with 2,952 deaths and Algeria, which confirmed 937 deaths. (end) mry.nam
