Iran informs IAEA about Natanz incident, safeguards activities to continue

VIENNA, July 3 (KUNA) -- The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said Friday it was informed by Iran about a fire in a building at the site of Natanz uranium facility early on Thursday, but no leak nor human casualties took place.
"Iran also informed IAEA the fire was quickly extinguished and there had been no nuclear material or other radioactive material in the building," the IAEA said in a statement.
The Natanz site is under IAEA safeguards, including both safeguards verification and Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) verification and monitoring, it said.
The Vienna-based Agency can confirm that there were no IAEA safeguards inspectors present at the time, and that the location where the incident occurred did not contain nuclear materials.
IAEA said it has been in contact with relevant Iranian authorities to confirm there would be no impact on its safeguards verification activities, which were expected to continue as before.
IAEA inspectors are present on a regular basis at Natanz. (end) amg.bs
