JCPOA underlines peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program - UN

KUWAIT, June 30 (KUNA) -- The United Nations on Tuesday stressed the importance of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) as the best way to ensure exclusively peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program.
This came in a briefing made by UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary A. DiCarlo on the ninth report of the Secretary General on the implementation of resolution 2231 (2015) (S/2020/531).
"The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, endorsed by resolution 2231, is a significant achievement of multilateral diplomacy and dialogue. It remains crucial to the global nuclear non-proliferation architecture and to regional and international security," she said.
The US withdrew from the JCPOA in May 2018. Before that date, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) verified through 11 reports that Iran was complying with its nuclear commitments included in the Plan, she added.
She expressed regret over the US withdrawal from the plan and the steps taken by Iran since July 2019 in response to the US move.
The plan was made on July 14, 2015 as a result of intensive diplomatic efforts and dialogue.
As a result of these steps, Iran has surpassed JCPOA-stipulated limits on its uranium enrichment level and on its stockpiles of heavy water and low-enriched uranium, she stated. (end) asf.hm
