Japan reports 29 new virus cases, total at 17,012

TOKYO, June 3 (KUNA) -- The number of Japan's new coronavirus infections rose by 29 to 17,012 over the last 24 hours as of 4 p.m. (0700 GMT) on Wednesday, the health ministry and local authorities said.
The country's death count climbed by three to 901. The hardest-hit Tokyo reported 12 additional infections, which brought the total cases in the city of about 14 million people to 5,295.
The tallies exclude those who were linked to the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined near Tokyo in February.
The Tokyo Metropolitan government issued an alert on Tuesday after confirming 34 new cases in the capital, the highest daily tally in nearly three weeks, urging residents to be stay cautious.
Tuesday's spike came a week after the central government lifted the nationwide state of emergency for Tokyo and its vicinity. (end) mk.rk
