HLT-JAPAN-CORONAVIRUS Japan reports 36 new virus cases, total at 16,930

TOKYO, June 1 (KUNA) -- The number of Japan's new coronavirus infections rose by 36 to 16,930 over the last 24 hours, the country's health ministry and local authorities said Monday.
Japan's death toll due to the virus rose by two to 898. The hardest-hit Tokyo reported 13 additional infections, which brought the total cases in the Japanese capital to 5,249, they added.
The tallies exclude those who were linked to the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined near Tokyo in February.
Many areas across the country fully resumed businesses on Monday, after the government lifted a state of emergency a week ago amid falling new infection cases.
In Tokyo, the metropolitan government relaxed business restrictions, allowing such facilities as retail stores, cinemas, sports gyms and cram schools to reopen after weeks of closures. Elementary and junior high schools in Tokyo also restarted classes for the first time in almost three months. (end) mk.mt
