US to send 1,000 ventilators for Brazil - WH

WASHINGTON, May 31 (KUNA) -- The White House announced Sunday that the US will soon be sending 1,000 ventilators for Brazil and that it has delivered two million doses of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ).
In a joint statement from the US and Brazil regarding health cooperation issued by the White House, it noted that the HCQ will be used "as a prophylactic to help defend Brazil's nurses, doctors, and healthcare professionals against the virus," and that it will also be used "as a therapeutic to treat Brazilians who become infected." "Further, in continuation of the two countries' longstanding collaboration on health issues, we are also announcing a joint United States-Brazilian research effort that will include randomized controlled clinical trials," the statement noted.
It indicated that these trials "will help further evaluate the safety and efficacy of HCQ for both prophylaxis and the early treatment of the coronavirus." "Going forward, the United States and Brazil will remain in close coordination in the shared fight against the coronavirus pandemic and the ongoing regional response to safeguard public health, further limit the spread of the coronavirus, advance the early development of a vaccine, and save lives," the statement affirmed.
Last week, US President Donald Trump suspended the entry of foreigners who have been in Brazil during the 14-day period before seeking admittance into the US amid the coronavirus outbreak in Brazil.
Brazil ranks second globally in the number of confirmed coronavirus cases with almost 500,000 cases and 28,834 reported deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University. (end) si.ibi
