Japan reports 34 new virus cases, total at 16,712

TOKYO, May 28 (KUNA) -- The number of Japan's new coronavirus infections rose by 34 to 16,712 over the last 24 hours, the health ministry and local authorities said Thursday.
The country's death toll climbed by seven to 871. The hardest-hit Tokyo reported 15 additional infections, staying below 20 for the 14th straight day, which brought the total cases in the city of about 14 million people to 5,195, they said.
Tokyo Metropolitan government revised the cumulative number of infections yesterday from 5,181 to 5,180.
The tally excludes those who were linked to the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined near Tokyo in February.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Monday lifted the state of emergency in the last five of the country's 47 prefectures ahead of the planned May 31 expiration. Abe declared the emergency on April 7 initially for seven urban prefectures, then expanded it to the entire country in mid-April. (end) mk.mt
