Japan reports 38 new virus cases, total at 16,621

TOKYO, May 25 (KUNA) -- The number of Japan's new coronavirus infections rose by 38 to 16,621 over the last 24 hours as of 4:00 p.m. (07:00 GMT) on Monday, the health ministry and local authorities said.
The death toll climbed by 16 to 841.
Tokyo reported eight additional infections, which brought the total cases in the city of about 14 million people to 5,160.
The tally excludes those who were linked to the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined near Tokyo in February.
The government decided on Monday to completely lift the state of emergency ahead of its planned May 31 expiration, Economic Revitalization Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura said.
Earlier in the day, the government's advisory endorsed the administration's plan to end the emergency for five prefectures including the hardest-hit Tokyo, Nishimura, who is in charge of the coronavirus response, briefed lawmakers at the steering committees of both chambers of parliament.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe declared the emergency on April 7 initially for seven urban prefectures, then expanded it to the country's all 47 prefectures in mid-April.
Abe has already lifted the state of emergency for 42 prefectures as the number of new infections has been on the downward trend. (end) mk.gb
