Coronavirus deaths in Africa surge to 3,185, cases at 104,279

RABAT, May 24 (KUNA) -- Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said Sunday the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) claimed 3,185 lives in the black continent so far with infection cases amounting to 104,279.
Africa CDC, the public health agency of the 54-member African Union, confirmed 32,372 cases in North African countries, 27,862 in West Africa, 21,683 in Southern Africa, 11,558 in East Africa and 10,804 in Central Africa.
Regarding the death toll, it said 1,541 people died of Covid-19 in North African countries, 417 in Southern Africa, 329 in Central Africa, 303 in East Africa and 595 in West Africa.
The AU member states appealed for donors to offer assistance amounting in value to USD 100 billion to help combat the pandemic and asked the creditors for loan waivers. (end) mry.sam.gb
