Nearly 2,000 deaths from coronavirus reported in US in single day

WASHINGTON, April 9 (KUNA) -- Johns Hopkins University on Thursday confirmed 1,973 new fatalities from the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) and 432,544 more infections in the United States in the past 24 hours.
The figures took the overall to 432,544 cases and 14,829 deaths, according to the latest daily update of the JHU Coronavirus Resource Center on the pandemic.
Meanwhile, Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said in an interview with CBS channel, "Americans have the potential to take summer vacations if we continue with mitigation strategies to prevent a resurgence.
"I say that with some caution, because as I said, when we do that, when we try to open up the country, we have to be prepared that when the infections start to rear their heads again that we have it in place a very aggressive and effective way to identify, isolate, contract trace it.
"So the answer to your question is yes, if we do the things that we need to do to prevent the resurgence," he pointed out.
Getting back to normal is not like a light switch that you turn on and off, Fauci said, noting that it'll be gradual and depend on where in the country you live.
"It is very likely that we will progress towards the steps towards normalization as we get to the end of this thirty days.
"I think that's going to be a good time to look and see how quickly can we make that move to try and normalize," he added. (pickup previous) rsr.gb
