Japan reports 320 new virus cases, total at 5,002

TOKYO, April 9 (KUNA) -- The number of Japan's new coronavirus infections rose by 320 to 5,002 over the last 24 hours as of 04:00 p.m. (0700 GMT) on Thursday, excluding 712 people who were linked to the virus-hit Diamond Princess cruise ship, the authorities said. The death toll climbed by seven to 105, excluding 11 from the cruise ship that was quarantined near Tokyo in February, according to the health ministry and local governments.
Tokyo had 181 additional infections, another record number for a single day, which brought the total cases in the Japanese capital to 1,519 (Tokyo Metropolitan government revised the cumulative number of infections yesterday from 1,440 to 1,338, so, the tally today is correct).
Prime Minister Abe Shinzo declared a state of emergency to contain the new coronavirus outbreak on Tuesday. The declaration, effective until May 6, covers seven prefectures, including Tokyo, Chiba, Osaka and Fukuoka.
Based on the declaration, prefectural governors in the designated areas can require residents to stay indoors except for essential reasons, close schools and cancel or postpone large-scale events.
Local authorities are also permitted to seize land and facilities from private owners for temporary medical facilities without their consent, and order transport companies to deliver medicines or medical equipment in urgent cases. (end) mk.gta
