Coronavirus death toll reaches 44 in Pakistan, seven in Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD, April 5 (KUNA) -- The total number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Pakistan has crossed 3,000 on Sunday with 44 deaths so far while Afghanistan has a total of 338 cases and seven deaths.
Pakistan's National Command and Operation Center said the total confirmed cases included 1,380 in eastern Punjab province, 864 in southern Sindh, 372 in northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 185 in southwestern Balochistan, 78 in federal capital Islamabad, 206 in Gilgit-Baltistan region and 12 cases in the Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
Pakistan's Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr. Zafar Mirza said, "I confirm that 44 people have died of the disease since its outbreak, and 170 patients have recovered while 18 patients are in critical condition.
"Around 60 percent of the patients carried the virus from other countries while 40 percent of the patients transmitted it locally," he noted in a statement.
"We are making preparations for future needs of the country, including those of the frontline health staff fighting against the spread of disease," he added.
Meanwhile, Spokesman of the Afghan Ministry of Public Health Wahidullah Mayar confirmed 38 new cases of coronavirus in the country bringing the total number of cases to 337.
"Seven people have died from coronavirus in Afghanistan, and 12 others have recovered," he added.
Afghanistan's western Herat province has the highest number of cases (216), while Kabul is in second place with 53 cases. (end) sbk.gb
