India registers 77 deaths, 3,374 positive cases due to COVID-19

NEW DELHI, April 5 (KUNA) -- Indian health authorities said on Sunday coronavirus has so far claimed 77 lives and total infection cases rose to 3,374.
Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said in its morning update today that nine more fatalities were reported in the last 24 hours taking the death toll to 77. Moreover, there were 472 fresh infections taking the total COVID-19 positive cases in the country to 3,374 from last evening's 2,902 cases.
Out of the 3,347 confirmed positive cases, 267 people recovered and were discharged from hospitals, amid the pandemic spread to 29 Indian states.
Maharashtra is worst affected state with 24 deaths and 532 positive cases, followed by Tamil Nadu with two deaths and 491 positive cases. New Delhi was not far behind, registering six deaths and a total of 460 infection cases.
Indian authorities had imposed a nation-wide lockdown for 21 days in wake of spread of the coronavirus, taking more lives as it spilled over from one state to another.
Central and state governments had slapped curfew-like restrictions, closing schools, educational institutions and universities, imposing a ban on religious and other festivals as well as huge gatherings.
All transport services including train, bus, metro and air flights also came to a halt in wake of the outbreak. (end) atk.rk
