US jobless claims hits record 6.6 mln last week of March

WASHINGTON, April 2 (KUNA) -- A record number of 6.6 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits in the week ending March 28, the Department of Labor showed Thursday, amid the economic impacts of the coronavirus outbreak across the nation and the stay at home orders.
"This marks the highest level of seasonally adjusted initial claims in the history of the seasonally adjusted series," the Department of Labor stressed.
It indicated that the previous week's level was revised up by 24,000 from 3,283,000 to 3,307,000.
In the last two weeks of March, 10.4 million Americans applied for benefits.
The highest week for claims was 695,000 in 1982, whereas The Great Recession high was 665,000 in March 2009, according to CNBC. (end) si.ibi
