N. Korea says it tested super-large multiple rocket launchers

TOKYO, March 30 (KUNA) -- North Korea's state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported Monday that the country tested super-large multiple rocket launchers on the previous day, calling the test a "success." Sunday's test was guided by Ri Pyong-chol, vice-chairman of the Central Committee of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea and conducted at the Academy of National Defense Science, according to the KCNA.
"The operational deployment of the weapon system of super-large multiple rocket launchers is a crucial work of very great significance in realizing a new strategic intention of the Party Central Committee for national defense," Ri was quoted as saying. The test was aimed at "verifying once again the tactical and technological specifications of the launch system to be delivered to units of the Korean People's Army," the report said. "The test-fire was conducted successfully," it added. But the KCNA did not mention whether North Korean leader Kim Jong-un had observed the launch.
The report came a day after South Korea's military said the North fired what appeared to be two short-range ballistic missiles off its east coast toward the East Sea (Sea of Japan), flying 230km with a maximum altitude of 30km. It marked the fourth round of such launches this month, and came after Pyongyang fired two short-range ballistic missiles believed to be its version of the US Army Tactical Missile System on March 21.
