GCC chief hails member states' action against coronavirus

RIYADH, Feb 27 (KUNA) -- Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Dr. Nayef Al-Hajraf on Thursday lauded GCC countries for taking precautions against the unprecedented coronavirus.
In a statement, Al-Hajraf also praised measures taken by Kuwait and Saudi Arabia at border checkpoints, such as checking passengers' travel routes and destinations.
The GCC countries have taken special precautions to deal with the virus breakout and have tackled emergency cases for safety of citizens and residents, Al-Hajraf said.
These States are implementing standard international health laws, set by the World Health Organization (WHO), in addition to enforcing a joint health code at border passageways -- adopted at the 39th GCC summit held in Riyadh in December 2018.
He also voiced satisfaction at efforts exerted by the GCC states' ministries of health, implementing resolutions of the GCC health minister issued during an extraordinary session on February 19.
Al-Hajraf urged GCC citizens and residents to adhere to instructions and guidelines issued by relevant authorities in this regard.
Kuwait and Saudi Arabia have already enforced precautions against the virus, such as suspending cross-border transportation for GCC citizens with only identity cards. (end) mdm.rk
