UN reaffirms commitment to two-state solution

NEW YORK, Jan 29 (KUNA) -- The UN said it was committed to a two-state solution after US President Donald Trump announced his administration peace plan for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres saw the US plan, dubbed deal of the century, and the UN position over the two-state solution has been announced years ago through relevant resolution of General Assembly and Security Council, Guterres spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement late Tuesday.
He was reacting to Trump's plan that he announced in Washington D.C. yesterday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu next to him.
The UN, said Dujarric, was committed to supporting the Palestinians and Israelis to solve their conflict on the basis of UN resolutions, international law and bilateral agreements in order to see two states living side-by-side in peace and security, and within the 1967 borders.
Trump announced said the plan has "been a long and very arduous process to arrive at this moment." He added that "this plan will double Palestinian territory and set the capital of the Palestinian state in eastern Jerusalem where the United States will happily open an embassy." The Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas rejected the deal and said the Palestinians would never accept a state without Al-Quds. (end) asf.bs
