6.5-magnitude quake rocks E. Turkey

ANKARA, Jan 24 (KUNA) -- An earthquake measuring 6.5 degrees on the Richter scale jolted eastern Turkish province of Elazig on Friday, according to Turkey's disaster agency.

The epicenter of the quake was 6.75 kilometers deep in Sivrice district, the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) said in a statement, carried by Anadolu news agency.
But, the disaster agency failed to reveal any further details.
A powerful earthquake hit the northern city of Izmit in 1999, killing nearly 17,000 people and displacing hundreds of thousands others. (end) rs.mt
