EU calls on Myanmar regime to implement ICJ ruling on Rohingya

BRUSSELS, Jan 23 (KUNA) -- The European Union Thursday called on Myanmar to "fully implement" the provisional measures ordered by the International Court of Justice related with the persecution of the Rohingya minority in the country.
The ICJ's order will be given to the United Nations Security Council. The implementation of the provisional measures is compulsory under international law, said Peter Stano, spokesperson for EU High Representative Josep Borrell, in a statement.
"Myanmar must ensure accountability for the gross violations of human rights perpetrated by some of its military and security forces. It must also ensure the protection of all civilians and safe and unfettered humanitarian access," said the EU statement.
"Myanmar must address the root causes of its conflicts, in Rakhine State, but also in Kachin and Shan States. Accountability of perpetrators of human rights violations and humanitarian law is a necessary part of this process. Myanmar must also create conditions for and facilitate a voluntary, safe, dignified and sustainable return of the Rohingya to Myanmar," it said.
The EU will also continue to closely follow the investigation by the International Criminal Court's Prosecutor for the alleged crimes in Myanmar falling within the ICC's jurisdiction, it said.
The EU statement noted that the Gambia had submitted the lawsuit against Myanmar on behalf of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
In a related development, the Burma Human Rights Network "heartily welcomed" the decision of the International Court of Justice.
"With these measures comes the responsibility of the international community to apply as much pressure as possible to ensure that Burma, the Burmese Military, and Aung San Suu Kyi comply with the court's orders," said the Network in a statement.
"Today is a great day for justice and finally brings hope for so many Rohingya who felt forgotten by the world for too long. Now will truly be hope that justice for the Rohingya may prevail," said BHRN's Executive Director, Kyaw Win. (pick up previous) nk.mt
