UN chief stresses importance of cease-fire in Libya

NEW YORK, Jan 22 (KUNA) -- The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has stressed the importance of cease-fire in Libya in order to move towards a real political process.
In a press statement after participation in a closed meeting of the Security Council on Libya Tuesday night, Guterres said he briefed member countries on the results of Berlin international conference pointing out that the meeting was a favorable opportunity to get from those countries commitment and non-interference and support of the cease-fire.
He added that the first economic meeting of the two sides was held with a regard to economic reform and will continue with holding of the joint military committee.
He affirmed that the establishment of a political forum would be an entity leading to a reform process that would allow the implementation of Libyan political life, but this matter has not yet been finalized.
On the role of the Security Council, Guterres said that the heads of state and government of the five permanent members or their representatives signed the Berlin Agreement, which considered very strong regarding the arms embargo.
He called for full acceptance of the conference outputs, sending his message to the Security Council leaderships to achieve peace and unity as Libya capable of governing by it's people in peace and security and cooperating with the neighbors in a positive manner. (end) asf.gaa
