Libya talks in Berlin aim to secure ceasefire

BERLIN, Jan 19 (KUNA) -- An international conference aimed at maintaining the current ceasefire between warring Libyan factions kicked off here on Sunday.
Some 11 countries, along with the European Union, African Union and Arab League, will aim to secure the truce on the path to peace between Libya's UN-recognised government, headed by Fayez Al-Sarraj, and the forces loyal to Gen Khalifa Haftar.
The talks will also look to put a stop to foreign intervention in the conflict and the supply of arms.
German Chancellor Angela has so far met each of the Libyan leaders separately ahead of the arrival of attending delegation heads, a government spokesman said.
These include presidents Vladimir Putin of Russia and Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey, with State Secretary Mike Pompeo filling in for US President Donald Trump.
Also attending are the representatives of the remaining permanent United Nations Security Council members, Algeria, Egypt, Congo, the United Arab Emirates and Italy. (end) anj.sd
