WASHINGTON, Jan 19 (KUNA) -- Senior officials at US President Donald Trump's administration said the Articles of Impeachment submitted by House Democrats are a "dangerous attack" on the right of the American people to freely choose their President.
In a background conference call in the White House late Saturday, one of the officials presented parts of responses prepared by the president's legal team, regarding the impeachment articles on Trump's allegedly pressuring Ukraine to open an investigation that could affect one of his political rivals.
"This is a brazen and unlawful attempt to overturn the results of the 2016 election and interfere with the 2020 election," the response said.
"The Articles of Impeachment are constitutionally invalid on their face. They fail to allege any crime or violation of law whatsoever, let alone high Crimes or Misdemeanors," it added.
On Friday, the White House announced the names of lawyers who will defend Trump's case during his impeachment trial next Tuesday.
On 18 December, the House of Representatives casted the majority of votes to accuse Trump of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. (end)
