Kuwait continues humanitarian aid throughout week

KUWAIT, Jan 18 (KUNA) -- The State of Kuwait continued its humanitarian efforts and activities this week through the aid of Syrian and Yemeni refugees, reflecting the importance of providing timely, safe, sustainable and unimpeded humanitarian assistance.
In the medical sphere, Kuwait's Al-Shifaa medical team conducted surgeries to treat orthopedic injuries, paralysis, burns, urology diseases and tumors for Syrian refugees in Sevgi hospital in Reyhanli, south Turkey. Team member Dr. Ali Al-Alanda said, in a statement to KUNA, that female doctors took part in the team's operations for the first time, providing psychiatric support for refugees who tried to commit suicide, due to severe conditions in their war-torn country This year's medical campaign is titled "don't turn your back to them," said Al-Alanda, adding that the team organized a donation campaign that collected USD 300,000 to afford the treatment and buy medicine for the refugees. He noted that they are also working on extending the donation period to collect another USD 150,000.
On the other hand, Kuwait's Al-Najat Charitable Society on Friday continued the "warmth and peace" campaign, which was launched last week to help Syrian refugees in the city of Sanliurfa in southern Turkey.
In a statement to KUNA, The campaign's Head, Omar Al-Thuwaini, said that the society distributed urgent aid that benefited more than 2,000 Syrian refugees in Turkey, stressing that this urgent relief comes within the framework of the efforts exerted by the society to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian refugees, especially in the winter season.
He pointed that the humanitarian aid included food baskets that would last one family for nearly a month, in addition to distributing blankets, mattresses and heating appliances.
He also noted that the Kuwaiti delegation included 27 volunteers from Kuwaiti youth, praising the interaction and cooperation of the people of goodness with the society's humanitarian projects. As for other parts of the world, the first representative of the Yemeni Socotra Governorate, Raed Al-Juraibi, inaugurated Friday a project to distribute food baskets to the people of the Arrhein region which 40 families benefited, with the support of the Kuwaiti Women Giving Humanitarian Team by Sheikh Abdullah Al-Nouri Charitable Society As well as the Kuwaiti Relief Society concluded the alternative classroom project that included 28 schools in the governorates of Lahij, Abyan and Marib, as part of the campaign (Kuwait next to you) that has been going on for years.
The Kuwaiti Standing National Committee for International Humanitarian Law and its Moroccan counterpart signed in the capital Rabat a memorandum of understanding to enhance cooperation between the two sides in the field of international humanitarian law.
Undersecretary of the Cassation court and Secretary-General of the Standing National Committee of International Humanitarian Law Counselor Adel Al-Eisa said that the visit saw the participate in a joint symposium entitled (non-international armed conflicts).
It included meetings between Kuwaiti and Moroccan officials. The Kuwaiti delegation visited universities and scientific centers to review and exchange experiences between the two countries in the field of implementing the rules of international humanitarian law. On her part, the head of the National Committee for Moroccan International Humanitarian Law expressed Farid Khamlichi praised the cooperation between Kuwait and Morocco.
She stressed the importance of spreading awareness over issues connected with humanitarian law, hammering such notions in the minds of individuals, groups and institutes.
This is especially important when it came educational, civil and military institutions, she added, noting that the groups' role was to adopt national legislation in line with international humanitarian law. (end) gaa
