Clashes amid ongoing protests in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Jan 17 (KUNA) -- Renewed clashes between anti-government protesters and police have erupted at a bridge near central Baghdad's Al-Khalani Square, authorities said on Friday.
Security forces responded in retaliation to an attempted attack by the demonstrators, using "non-deadly" means, Abdulkarim Khalaf, a spokesman for Iraq's armed forces told the state news agency, INA.
The spokesman did not reveal the number of casualties resulting from the incident, however, activists say 10 protesters were wounded after they were attacked by security forces with tear gas.
Protesters, who have been gathering in the neighbouring Al-Khalani and Al-Tahreer squares for over 100 days now, are calling for a prime minister with no party affiliation to head the country after Adel Abdulmehdi earlier stepped down in response to the protester demands. (end) ahh.sd
