US congratulates Algeria on election of new president

WASHINGTON, Dec 13 (KUNA) -- The US has congratulated the Algerian people on the recent president election, expressing readiness to work with the new president for the benefit of the two countries.
"We look forward to working with President-elect Abdelmadjid Tebboune to promote regional security and prosperity," the US Department of State's Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said in a press statement.
She noted that the US and Algeria enjoy a mutually respectful and beneficial partnership.
Ortagus voiced US support to the right of Algerians to peacefully express their views.
"Over the past year, the Algerian people have voiced their aspirations not just at the ballot box but in the streets, as well," she concluded.
Tebboune was declared Friday as the new president of Algeria after winning Thursday's presidential election with 58.15 percent of the votes. (end) rsr.ibi
